A Nuclear Redemption: The Future of Nuclear Energy in an Advancing World

A Senior Thesis by Hazel Abetti

The following publication is Hazel Abetti’s senior thesis, a research project guided by Dr. Christy Anne Vaughan of Kepler Education and Classical Christian Education International.

Abstract

This paper argues for the revival and expansion of nuclear energy as the primary clean alternative to fossil fuels. Abetti presents a tripartite case for nuclear energy based on its dependability, safety, and efficiency, asserting it is uniquely capable of meeting global energy demands while reducing carbon emissions. Abetti critiques public fear surrounding nuclear incidents—Chernobyl, Fukushima, and Three Mile Island—as overblown due to media sensationalism rather than scientific evidence, and affirms that nuclear energy remains one of the safest energy sources per terawatt-hour. Technological advancements such as small modular reactors (SMRs), reprocessing methods like PUREX, and deep geological storage are explored as viable solutions to longstanding concerns over nuclear waste. The case study of France serves to illustrate the benefits of a nation transitioning to a largely nuclear-powered grid, including energy independence and economic profitability. The paper concludes with a call for informed public advocacy, policy reform, and investment in next-generation nuclear technologies. Abetti contends that nuclear energy ought to be embraced as the cornerstone of the sustainable energy future.
